Aspiration

A term in phonetics that describes how to pronounce certain sounds, especially consonants. A speaker releases a small puff of air when making an aspirated sound is made while an unaspirated one releases no air. Examples are the different pronunciations of the letter P in the English words ‘pot’ and ‘spot’. The former is aspirated while the latter is not.
