                  Austerity

Generally, a very simple way of life often characterised by hardships, frequently practised by ascetics. In Jainism, an act of austerity or self-discipline is believed to create bodily heat or tapas that destroys karma. Both lay and mendicant Jains practise internal and external austerities, which are set out in texts on conduct.
